Eggbeater Impressions
So last weekend I finally installed the eggbeaters. First of all they look hot on the F3000 because they are all black to match the crank arms, with a goldish color spring around the spindle to complement the yellow cannondale logo on the downtube.
Compared to my Shimano pedals, these don’t have a very audible click in sound, which is actually soothing while commuting since i’m in and out somewhat often. not sure how it will pan out on the trails though. clip out has been very reliable so far. it’s actually more of a slide out than a clip out, as because the cleat is not held in by the spring tension on the pedal but rather by the shape of the pedal, you don’t feel like you are clamped in per se. it’s kind of a nice feeling and clip out is somewhat smoother than with SPD. I also don’t feel like my cleat moves around fore/aft at all while clipped in, which is great compared to before (probably due to worn cleats), but there is still that 15° of lateral float.
And let’s just say no comparison when I held an eggbeater in one hand and the old pedal in the other - very noticeable weight difference (110 g vs 185 g). Yay.
After riding both roads and trails with the Eggbeaters, I remain impressed. I have experienced not one false positive clip out, yet the rotational freedom offered is incredibly comfortable. When I do want to clip out, the exit remains smooth and reliable. In fact, I like these so much I’m considering a pair for road riding, to replace my Looks. I am concerned about the ‘hot foot’ issues I’ve read about due to the smaller platform surface area.
Overall, five stars! For others’ opinions, check out their MTBR reviews.
